We received a lot of positive comments on our last women’s health blog, so we thought we should shed some light on a topic and question we often get at AmEx Pharmacy regarding the use of hormonal replacement therapy in the treatment of menopause.
Hormone Replacement Therapy, HRT, was once routinely used to treat menopausal symptoms and protect long-term health. Then a few years back large clinical trials showed health risks. What does this mean to you? See what the Staff at Mayo Clinic had to say about how the treatments have advanced in recent years, and how to find out if hormone replacement might be right for you: http://mayocl.in/1m0J05J
One current trend we are seeing in this specialty area is younger women using the therapy successfully. The NIH does a great job summarizing a unique 13-year study on this, conducted by the Women’s Health Initiative, WHI: http://1.usa.gov/1Xa6o5C
So what’s the bottom line on HRT…
Doctors say that taking a low-dose treatment — the most effective way to get HRT’s benefits while limiting the possible increased risks of heart disease and breast cancer, identified by the WHI. “We would say if you have moderate to severe symptoms that are sufficient to interfere with your life, then by all means take hormone replacement therapy — but not for more than four or five years” at most, says Jacques Rossouw, MD, director of the WHI. “And in most cases, it’s not even necessary to take it that long.”
Hormone replacement therapy is not the cure-all it was once thought to be, but for more severe cases, it remains the best bet for treating menopause’s unpleasant symptoms and improving quality of life. “That’s something I don’t think anybody would dispute,” says Dr. Rogerio Lobo, MD, an OB/GYN on staff at New York City’s New York Presbyterian Hospital. “Just remember to go with the lowest possible effective dose, for the shortest possible period of time.”
